Of all the various strategies and approaches to link building, getting the best backlinks your top competitors have is Store Coach's #1 recommended approach. That's why we've developed the Competitor Link Thief, which makes it easy to identify your competitors' most valuable links and obtain backlinks from the same sources.
Why Target Competitor Backlinks?
You may be wondering about the logic behind getting backlinks from all the same pages that are already linking to your competitors. Think of it this way... The page ranking #1 in Google for a particular keyword phrase ranks #1 for a reason. (Same thing for the #2 ranking page, #3 ranking page, and so on.) A large part of that reason is the backlinks those pages have. So it makes perfect sense to identify those backlinks and go get them yourself.
You might be thinking, "But if I just go get the exact same backlinks the top-ranking site has, will Google really reward me for basically copying what they have? And won't it look suspicious to Google to have the exact same links?" These are both good questions, but because of the way the Link Thief works you don't need to worry about those issues at all.
How Does the Competitor Link Thief Work?
When you use the Competitor Link Thief, you won't be going after all the backlinks from the #1 ranking site. Instead, the Link Thief finds the very best backlinks (i.e. only the highest quality "top tier" links) for each of the 20-30 top ranking pages in Google. When you get 8 of the same backlinks result #1 has, 5 of the same links result #2 has, 7 of the same links result #3 has, and so on, it looks 100% natural to Google. And you end up having better links than any single competitor site has, because you went after only the top-tier backlinks for each site!
Besides compiling a list of all the top-tier backlinks your competitors have, the Link Thief also helps you keep your link building efforts organized. You can keep track of your attempts to get links and the end result of your efforts using the buttons in the 'Link Request Log'. You can write custom notes to yourself for each backlink. Another huge time-saving feature is that the Link Thief tracks your actions made on a particular backlink that appears on multiple backlink lists. For example, suppose a particular backlink appears on 4 different lists. When you mark something on the 1st list, all 3 of the other lists are automatically updated. This saves you from a lot of lost time (and frustration) duplicating your efforts.
In the "good old days" we had multiple complex spreadsheets all over the place. Every time we sat down to work on link-building, we'd spend the first 15 or 20 minutes just to get organized enough to start! Now, with the Competitor Link Thief, you can literally be getting competitor backlinks the minute you sit down. Even if you only have 10 spare minutes to devote to it, you'll likely be able to get a backlink or two.
Maintain a Consistent, Gradual Approach
Like with all your link building efforts, make sure to build links gradually over a period of time. Without the Link Thief, this really wouldn't be a concern and we wouldn't even bother mentioning it here. But where you can now get dozens of backlinks in the time it used to take to get one, we thought we'd better remind you to take it slow to appear natural to Google. And, as always, make sure to always stay focused on getting high-quality backlinks. Always remember that quality is more important than quantity, now more than ever before.
