How to Optimize Your Meta Tags
HIGHLIGHTS:
- This is the first video in Part 2: Optimizing On-Page (Internal) Factors
- Meta tags are basically just labels embedded into each page that tell Google what the page is about
- The meta title is the most important meta tag & really the most important on-page factor - it tells Google what keyword phrase(s) the page is targeting
- The meta title should be short & should NOT have punctuation - simply list the 1-2 keyword phrase(s) the page is targeting (with a - or | or * symbol separating each keyword phrase, if applicable)
- The meta description should reinforce the meta title by including the targeted keyword phrase(s) a couple times (in singular & plural format), plus maybe a couple LSI keywords (closely related terms)
- The meta description doesn't appear on the page itself, but it is shown to potential visitors on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) so you should make it "salesy" and appealing to shoppers
- The meta keywords tag is obsolete & outdated - it is no longer used - don't worry about it
- The H1 (heading) tag is the big, bold heading at the top of the page which is clearly visible to visitors
- The H1 tag should be in heading format and should include your targeted keyword phrase and reinforce the meta title
- Your initial focus should be on optimizing your home page - all other pages should have unique meta tags as well, but don't worry about researching what keyword phrases to target on your other pages yet
- The 'SEO Score' calculator within the Rank Tracker tool helps you verify whether your meta tags are optimized for the keyword phrase you're targeting on any given page
