Shipping Set Up Advice For Your Ecommerce Store

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Don't make shipping more complex than it needs to be - you do NOT need to "match" your supplier's shipping methods or shipping charges

  • Whenever possible, we strongly recommend that you offer FREE SHIPPING to Mainland USA

  • Do NOT base your shipping on what your supplier uses or charges - that's completely irrelevant!

  • Instead, you should mostly base it on what the top 3-4 competitors in your market are doing

  • The all-inclusive retail price (the total amount you receive from your customers) is all that matters to you - it doesn't matter what the "breakdown" is between product price and shipping

  • Within Zulu Cart, you can create unlimited "shipping zones" and then activate 1 or more specific shipping options (methods) to each of those zones (and create a custom name for each option)

  • There are all kinds of shipping options available to meet your specific needs:

    • free shipping
    • free shipping over a specified order amount
    • free shipping under a specified weight
    • flat rate per item
    • flat rate per order
    • flat rate per supplier
    • percentage rate based on the order amount
    • table rate based on order total
    • table rate based on weight

  • You can create a custom name for any shipping option you create so that any option can look to customers like it's "actual" shipping (i.e. UPS, FedEx, USPS) even though it's really a flat rate, table rate, or percentage rate

  • Although we personally recommend NOT using real-time shipping to calculate actual UPS charges, Zulu Cart DOES include "real-time UPS" as an available option

  • You can also create a "shipping override" for any product in your store, which will be used for the shipping amount for that product regardless of your general storewide shipping settings (this is useful when a) just a few particular products temporarily ship for free, or b) a few particular products are expensive to ship)

  • Make sure to read the How TO Decide how much to Charge for Shipping article as well as the How NOT to Decide how much to Charge for Shipping article (which is equally as important)
